If you were to find yourself on a country road in Upstate New York and see this handsome farmhouse come into view, you’d likely guess it had been around for a century or so. And who could blame you? With its white clapboard siding, black Z-brace shutters and metal roof, it bears all the hallmarks of a historic Hudson Valley home. But that time estimate would be off by a couple hundred years. It’s actually a new-build designed by Jimmy Crisp, founder of Crisp Architects. And, yes, his trickery is entirely intentional. “The clients came to us eager to create a family getaway that felt in keeping with the property they had just purchased,” explains Crisp. “With 250 scenic acres, a classic farmhouse was the natural design direction.” Borrowing from the local vernacular architecture, Crisp used the area materials to create an exterior that brings to mind another time and place. “Working farmhouses were large—they needed to sleep a crowd, after all—but far from ostentatious. The style was simple and unadorned,” says Crisp. “I believe we recreated that here with a few twists.” Those twists include the red double doors and rows of factory- inspired sconces and pendants.
